What is legal verification?

A prescribed examination and test checking whether an instrument meets metrological requirements. Successful verification is confirmed by a verification mark or certificate of conformity where the conditions for issue are met.

What is legal metrology, and who supervises verification?

Accepted Answer

Legal metrology regulates measurements important to public interest and fair trade. In Slovenia, verification is performed by the Metrology Institute (MIRS) and bodies it designates. MIRS inspectors conduct metrological supervision. Accreditation alone is not designation to perform verification.

Who needs a regulated measuring instrument or legally verified scale?

Accepted Answer

Intended use is decisive: examples include trade by weight, calculation of levies, official proceedings, patient weighing, pharmacy preparation of medicines and sale of prepacked goods. Slovenian requirements derive from the Metrology Act (ZMer-1) and the relevant instrument regulations. Tell us how the result is used.

How do regulated scales differ from internal process scales?

A regulated scale is used for a purpose covered by metrological legislation and must meet conformity-assessment and verification requirements. An internal process scale serves a process outside that regulated use. Its suitability is managed through the process and quality system, usually with calibration and interim checks. An industrial location alone does not determine the category.

How can I tell whether my scale is eligible for legal verification?

Check the nameplate, type, serial number, prescribed markings and conformity documentation from before first use. For newer non-automatic instruments intended for regulated use, check CE and supplementary metrology markings; older instruments follow their applicable procedure. CE marking alone is insufficient. Send a nameplate photo and available documents. Periodic verification cannot simply convert an instrument without the required conformity into one suitable for regulated use.

What is a verification certificate of conformity, and when is it needed?

A certificate of conformity of an instrument with regulations (POS) documents conformity during legal verification. It is issued where the instrument's construction or use makes a verification mark impractical. You may also request one for a marked instrument, for records or audit evidence; an additional charge may apply. POS differs from the manufacturer's EU declaration of conformity and does not replace a calibration certificate. The basis is Article 10 of the Slovenian Rules on the procedure for verification of measuring instruments.

What is the verification interval?

It depends on instrument type and, for non-automatic scales, maximum capacity. See the interval table below. Where the interval is under five years, validity runs to the end of the month in which it expires. Intervention, damaged seals or other prescribed circumstances may require earlier extraordinary verification.

Yes. Alongside mass instruments, we arrange verification of blood pressure monitors through AD LAB's services. Provide manufacturer, model, serial number and quantity; suitability is checked against the applicable instrument regulations.
